Mountain Maker Madness - June 7th
On June 7th from 9am-12pm, we are holding "Mountain Maker Madness" - our first annual celebration and showcase of student builders, creators and makers.
Students from all CRPS schools will be invited to the LGMS gym to showcase home or school creations to other students, parents and friends. We are looking for examples of woodworking, writing, sculpting, painting, computer programming, art, film-making, robotics, model-building, cooking, animation, knitting, etc - anything created by YOU that you'd enjoying showing off! There is no homework, no writeups, no judging and no prizes. You just bring in and show off the cool thing you made.
Let us know if you MIGHT have a project and we'll contact you to figure out more! There is absolutely no commitment at the moment. We just want to hear about all the cool things you've built.
Fill out our contact form by clicking HERE.

It's a Code, Code World
Ken Symington's "Design Thinking and Media Communications" class recently did a breakout.edu. What's a Breakout.edu? It's a mysterious box, protected with numerous strange and unusual locks that can only be opened by solving problems. Problems - about code. It requires teamwork, creativity, persistence, and problem solving. However, it doesn't require a locksmith, because the class...solved it!

Innovate Canmore Launch
Here's an interesting Rocky Mountain Outlook story on Innovate Canmore's recent mission and launch. Innovate Canmore is a CRPS partner, and we're hoping for their wild success because we plan to fill their high-tech incubator with a horde of Canmore-grown student startups. The Cantilever Challenge
The cantilever challenge was a week-long activity in Ken Symington's "Design Thinking and Media Communications" class.
Students had to build the longest and strongest cantilever measured from the desk edge to the end of the cantilever. Students were given one period to brainstorm ideas, then each day after they built with a different material - starting with newspaper, then moving to straws, and then finally testing their engineering skills with spaghetti. To make things interesting, builders got to use only 1 meter of masking tape per day, and an unlimited supply of the assigned daily material.
We used a cup hanging over the end and put pennies in it to add weight to test strength and we recorded the weight after it bent 10 cm below the horizon from the desk or collapsed. We kept a tally of points (10 points for top length, 10 points for top strength) each day and totaled them up the last day for the cantilever grand design champions!
Here's the newspaper iteration (click for a bigger image)
Then moving on to straw. Still only using 1 meter of masking tape!
And then finally spaghetti.
